Watch and dance along to some of Hawaiʻi’s favorite mele including “My Yellow Ginger Lei\,” Lei Hoʻoheno\,” “Mele ʻOhana\,” and “Kanaka Waiwai.”

DESCRIPTION:Benny Uyetake “Uncle Benny Uyetake”\, Born and raised in Hilo\, Hawaii. \nEducator as a Music teacher and department head of the arts teaching Ukulele at S.E. Kalama Intermediate in Makawao HI. \nLearned the ukulele at the age of 9 by watching his dad play and also learned from Ukulele Jazz great\, Jesse Kalaima\, a family friend. Benny learned the guitar from his older brother at the age of 10\, and played professional gigs at the age of 12\, in restaurants\, hotel lounges\, and concerts. \nStudied music at the Cornish School of Music in Seattle and The Berklee College of Music in Boston\, and received a B.A. Seattle University and a M.A. Education. \nAt 19\, worked with Dorothy Thompson\, Co-Founder of the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. Also worked with Edith Kanakaole at Parks and Recreation. \nThroughout the years worked with Jazz Alley TV\, Maui Arts and Cultural Center\, and also performed shows with Judy Collins\, Herb Alpert\, Thompson Square\, Henry Kapono\, Diana Ross\, Jake Shimabukuro\, to name a few. \nPerforms locally at festivals\, and Restaurants\, and enjoys an island lifestyle in Haiku\, Maui with his lovely wife Debbie. \nAs part of our recent Center-wide revitalization\, seating is provided throughout the property for guests to enjoy. At this time\, we kindly ask guests not to bring their own chairs. Mahalo for your understanding. Our special events and entertainment are designed to complement the guest shopping and dining experience and guests are welcome to come and go as they wish.

Today\, woven creations are as creative as they are practical\, and as fashionable as they are functional! \nIn our weekly Ulana Lau Niu events\, Uncle Ron will lead you in exploring the art of Coconut Frond Weaving. You’ll be introduced to the basics of the art form\, talk story about its history and many uses\, and have a chance to view Uncle Ron’s distinctive Maui Coco Roses. Also\, take home your very own hand-crafted coconut frond creation to commemorate your experience with us here at Whalers Village\, located at the Ohana Courtyard.
